Hockley
Street Studios opened in 2001 on the first and second floors of an old victorian
factory building, which had previously seen use as an underground strip-club
and brothel. Call it civic redevelopment.
The business was started (and is still run) by musicians so frustrated by the lack of decent, affordable practice space in the West Midlands that they decided to create their own - a profesional environment that was fun to be in, a place where musicians come to play.
We started out with just a handful of lockups and steadily built up a good reputation. The next year we opened our first hourly studio. Later still we took on the ground floor and basement of the building, and began construction of a whole new set of rooms.
We now have seventeen lockups, five hourly studios, a digital recording suite with two live rooms, a stage area and a teaching studio.
We also have an in-house equipment repair workshop, courtesy of Fab Gear Repair & Restoration.
We are host to jam nights and teaching workshops, and have provided rehearsal space for local bands including 35 Seconds, Adrenaline, A Day Called Desire and many others, plus more widely-known names such as Editors and Envy and Other Sins.
There's plenty of chill-out space around the building, plus a pool table and table football machine - both free to play. The shop at reception sells hot and cold drinks, snacks, strings, picks, batteries and other musical consumables. We also give out free ear plugs.
Hockley Street has become something of a musical community - a great place to meet other musicians. Many bands and recording collaborations have begun within our walls.
You're welcome to come in to see the place and talk to us. We are open from 2pm every day (including bank holidays) and are only a ten-minute walk from Sound Control Birmingham.
Like all
indoor public spaces, Hockley Street Studios is now completely non-smoking.
We have tables and chairs outside for smokers, or anyone else who feels like
a bit of fresh air.
